From time to time I am asked about the resources I've used to create my web site, so if you're interested then this section's for you. :)
WEB WIZ GUIDE - Web Wiz Forum Program This FREE ASP (active server pages) forum program is the backbone application behind the Shovel web site ... as I have 3 instances of it running on the site. The Shovel Shack is obvious, but the Q&A and Writings sections are each driven by my own modified versions of this same program. I heartily recommend it to anyone looking to create an ASP-based discussion forum (requires a Windows ASP-enabled server on their web host). There is also a forum on the site where you can find lots of help in setting up your own forum. I also use the Guestbook, Mailing List and Site News applications from Web Wiz Guide.
JAlbum: Web Photo Album Generator Another excellent program that is relatively easy to set up and use. It is the program I use to create the Photo section of the Shovel web site ... of course, with my own modifications. I can't seem to leave anything alone! :)
Learn how to build simple web pages with HTML and HTML editors.
W3 SCHOOLS: HTML The basic building blocks of the static (non-interactive) web page.
W3 SCHOOLS: XHTML Taking HTML to the next level.
One of the means to enable web site interactivity!
W3 SCHOOLS: ASP FREE online training courses for ASP scripting.
One of the main goals of CSS is to separate structure (appearance, navigation, etc) from the content (the actual words or message that people read on your web site). Once set up properly it becomes a snap to change the fonts, colors, menus and their addresses - throughout the web site - by the modification of one or more pages! It leaves you more time simply writing and less time having to change every page when you add some new feature. It is well worth your time to learn CSS. By the way, you will probably notice that most of these sites have much more to offer than just CSS.
WESTCIV CSS Tutorials This web site has downloadable courses to sell, but they also offer those same courses online for FREE one week at a time. Those courses are: HTML and XHTML for CSS, CSS Level 1, CSS Level 2, Color and Graphics for the Web, the Complete CSS Guide (I'm waiting for that last one to roll around again). The material is excellent and you can get a good grasp on web site building with these classes.
W3 SCHOOLS: CSS This site has an online training section dealing with CSS ... all for FREE!
NOODLE INCIDENT - BOX LESSONS This is where I found the basic layout for the Shovel Web site. I started out with the Three Column box + Top box layout ... only to later remove the right column. The writer includes some work-arounds for certain browsers that don't display it properly. Setting this up was my real introduction into CSS ... and it was a worthwhile challenge! :)
THE NEMESIS PROJECT: Tutorials, Demos, and Hacks An excellent listing of 100+ links to specific CSS layouts!
LISTAMATIC This is where I got the coding to create the left pane rollover buttons on the Shovel web site ... but there are many other options on this site to create CSS menus.
GLISH - CSS Layout Techniques Lots of nice CSS techniques, resources and tutorials.
BRAIN JAR Though I have posted this under CSS - which the site does address - the main thing I found at this site was the excellent ASP Form Mail script.
W3C (web-standards org.) CSS, Level 1 Guide This contains a lot of CSS style properties ... helpful when you've got a basic handle on CSS and want to tweak certain aspects in the CSS.
WEB DEVELOPER'S Virtual Library
Huge CSS Links site I just found this web page that is filled with CSS links. Worth a look if you need help. :)
