Hey Doc, What's the Glove for?

"I don't mean to probe, but ..." Yeah, sure. We do it so well one might think we were professionals. The proctologist probes because - well, I don't know why - but it's his job and he gets paid for it. Proctology is a probing profession, one expects to feel intimidated and uncomfortable at these examinations!

I wonder if this type of doctor is more prone to suffer from psychological disorders because of the nature of their clientele. I mean, don't you think most of their patients would be more reluctant to make an appointment with the "Proc Doc" than with other practitioners? Let's say you have the flu and you decide to go to the doctor. He's going to do an exam and maybe even stick you with a needle, but he's not going to put on a rubber glove and ask you to bend over!

The truth is that we enjoy probing into someone else's affairs. There seems to be this insatiable desire to dig deep and discover as much dirt as possible ... just look at all the tabloid journalism!! And I'm not only referring to the scandal sheets, for a good portion of the news stories today resemble a rectal exam made public.

Wherever character plays an important role you can be sure somebody works overtime behind the scenes to cast a bad light on those who have achieved some measure of prominence. The truth is the truth, but do we take enjoyment in seeing another fall? Are we caught up in the probe more than we were ever concerned with the value of their soul? Just consider how professional character assassins are supported on a grand scale by a world that takes every chance it can get to boast of it's love and concern for mankind!

And this is the same religious mind-bent fostered by an organization that provides fertile ground for it to grow. You know, some are called to plant, some to water, but most ... to probe!! In some groups, there is only one official proctologist; in others, there are a select few; and then there are places where gloves are handed out indiscriminately to everybody.

Of course, it's all being done "out of love"; we are concerned for the guy who doesn't measure up. I just gotta make sure that the guy isn't me. It's the same old program known as "CYA" ... just with a religious twist! If you don't know what that means, ask anybody in the business or political world. Just watch your back when you hear the sound of a latex glove snapping into place!
